Preparing Your Child for Their First Dental Visit

A child’s first dental visit sets the tone for how they feel about the dentist for years to come. A little preparation goes a long way toward making it a calm, even positive experience.

When to start

Most dentists recommend a first visit around the time the first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. Early visits are mostly about getting your child comfortable with the environment, not about treatment.

How to talk about it beforehand

Keep the language simple and positive. Avoid words like “hurt,” “shot,” or “pain,” even when reassuring them, since young children tend to focus on the word itself. Instead, talk about the dentist “counting teeth” or helping keep their smile healthy.

On the day

Try to schedule the visit when your child is well-rested and not hungry or overtired. Bringing a favourite toy or comfort item can help too. It’s normal for a first visit to be short, sometimes just a look around and a quick count of teeth.

Our team is experienced with nervous first-timers and takes things at your child’s pace. If you’re due for a first visit, get in touch and we’ll make sure it’s an easy one.
